How to Care for your Stainless Steel Furniture

We use 316 Marine Grade Steel

Teak Warehouse sells only 316 marine-grade stainless steel. The reason for this being is that it will not rust, dependent on normal care, whereas other grades of stainless steel will rust and break down easily. 316 Marine grade stainless steel is used on boats and in jewelry. For example, did you know that, Rolex® only uses 316 grade stainless steel in their watches?

Fortunately, cleaning for stainless steel furniture is relatively easy and does not take a long time. The best thing to do for stainless steel is to pay attention to it. Depending on your environment, the furniture might need more attention than other environments. Keeping an eye on the health of the furniture and doing regular checkups and maintenance is essential to have your stainless steel furniture looking as new as the first day you bought it!

  • Regular maintenance and cleaning of all types of stainless steel is required to keep these attractive attributes. Stainless steel must be kept clean for a long material life. Dirty, smoggy, or industrial environments will require more frequent cleaning programs, as will high humidity marine environments. Often, a simple wipe down with a microfiber cloth will remove the slight cloudiness that forms when some oxidation is forming on electro-polished 316 stainless. The softness of the cloth and its design will remove the slight oxidation without the need for chemical or mechanical cleaners.
  • Strong bleaches and chloride-based cleaners should not be used on stainless steel. To keep its original appearance, stainless steel must be cleaned when it looks dirty.

For routine cleaning, a PH-neutral soap and water is sufficient, applied with a sponge or cloth. This is likely to be needed only 1-2 times a year, as this material is quite resistant to oxidation and retention of residue. Fingerprints can be easily moved using a general stainless-steel cleaner such as 3M® Stainless Steel Cleaner. Stains and discoloration generally require the use of a Scotchbrite® pad to brighten the material and then the application of a stainless-steel cleaner to help protect it. Often, such heavy cleaning won’t be necessary if you follow the maintenance steps as outlined above.
